Amazing Grace

Words by John Newton (1725–1807) · Public domain

The words

  1. Stanza 1. Amazing grace! how sweet the soundThat saved a wretch like me!I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

  2. Stanza 2. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear,The hour I first believed!

  3. Stanza 3. Thro’ many dangers, toils, and snares,I have already come;’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,And grace will lead me home.

Notes on this text

  • The first three of Newton’s six stanzas (Olney Hymns, 1779), as printed in 1908. The well-known “When we’ve been there ten thousand years” stanza is not Newton’s and is not in this book.
  • Stanza 3, line 3: Newton wrote “’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far”; the 1908 book prints “hath”.
